By Kenan Heise
Lester Jacobs, 76, president of the Castle Baking Co. Inc., was a pioneer in packaged bakery goods in the Chicago area. In the 1950s, along with members of his family, he helped found radio station, WOAK. It became fine arts station WFMT.
A resident of Des Plaines, he died Sunday at a friend's home.
The Castle Baking Co. was founded by his late father, Harry. It specializes in hearth-baked goods.
Mr. Jacobs started in the business as a young man. After serving in the infantry in World War II, he returned to Chicago and helped expand the company into one of the leading producers of hearth-baked items in the country.
In 1980, he helped establish Alpha Baking Co. from the former Mary Ann Baking Co. Alpha bakes a wide variety of products and is one of the largest independent baking firms in the country.
In the early 1950s, he joined his late brother, Bernie, his father and his late brother-in-law, Harry Brown, in creating WOAK. It was his brother who ran the station and led it to become one of the major fine arts stations in the world.
"He was generous and warm and went out of his way to help people out," said his daughter-in-law, Janie Jacobs.
Survivors include three, sons, Craig, Scott and Marc; a daughter, Robin Stroud; a sister, nine grandchildren; and his longtime companion, Beverly Didetch.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Weinstein Brothers Wilmette Chapel, 111 Skokie Blvd., Wilmette. |
