Source | Family Tree - Will Ogburn for Silverman/Buckner Family Publication: Family Tree Dated February 2002 Text: Identified by SS. Spelled variously as Mosharin amd Mosharon. Carrie Buckner is the sister of Rebecca (Becky) Buckner, who married Chaim (Harris) Silverman, Mosharon's brother. No other information was available from family members. SS. Buckner genealogy notes follow those on the Silverman.
Mosharon is the first in the family to be listed in the Baltimore City Directory: in the 1877 Directory he is listed as Moses Silverman, shoemkr, 61 Harrison Street. Two years later, in the 1879 Directory, still a shoemkr, Moses is living at 22 Harrison Street.
The birth of their second child, Cecelia, on June 26, 1879, is evidenced by a birth certificate in the name of Moses and Caroline Silberman's (spelled with a "b" and not a "v"). The birth occurred at 227 Harrison Street, but I bet is more accurately read - if rechecked - as 22 1/2 Harrison Street. Carrie is identified as "Caroline Bukner Silberman" born in Russia, and Mosharon is identified as Moses Silverman, a "Shoemacher" also born in Russia. The attendant (probably a midwife) was Mrs. Lara Casper of 52 Lombard Street, possibly the same women who attended the birth of Harris' and Rebecca's son Louis.
In the 1880 census, Mosharon is identified as Morris Silverman, and Carrie as Caroline. Both were born in Poland to Polish parents. He was 29 and she 24; he a Store Keeper, she HouseKeeping. Both children, Harry and Cecelia, were born in Maryland, confirming that they must have immigrated before c1878. Like various siblings, the family lived on Harrison Street; Morris and Caroline lived at number 32, west side.
That Morris is really Moses Silverman, and that Moses is Harris' brother Mosharon, is confirmend both by more than circumstance. In later listings in the Baltimore City Directories, Moses lives at the same address as Morris (32 Harrison Street); is listed as Moses A., consistent with Moses Aaron or Mosharon; is living with and in business with Harris; and later is living with Solomon, presumably their father.
The birth certificate for daughter Rebecca states that a female child was born November 20. 1883 at 32 Harrison Street, as the fourth child of Aaron and Caroline Silberman (spelled with a ?b? not a ?v?). Aaron is a shoemaker, and both parents were born in "Europe." That this is their fourth child means that an unknown child was born after Cecelia and before Rebecca, and probably did not survive long.
In the 1884 City Directory, Moses A. Silverman, "clothing," lives 32 Harrison Street. [This by the way is also the address for Lucy Silverman's maternal great great uncle, Phillip Hamburger in 1854.] Notably, Hester Buckner is also living at 32 Harrison Street. Presumably Hester is the sister of Carrie Buckner Silverman, but this is uncertain.
In the next City Directory (1885), Moses Silverman is listed as "(Silverman & Bro), h 100 Light St whf," the same listing as Harris Silverman. The business is listed separately as Silverman & Bro. (Moses and Harris Silverman), liquors, 100 Light st whf. [Perhaps not coincidentally, Moses was to die an apparent alcoholic.]
A Moses Silverman, born in Russia, is recorded as filing with the Baltimore City Court a Declaration of Intention to become an American citizen and renouncing all allegiance to the Emperor of Russia, on September 21, 1885.
The 1886 Baltimore City Directory changes the listing a little. Moses is listed as "(S & Bro) 100 Light," just as Harris is, and the business is Silverman & Bro. (M. and H. Silverman) saloon and clothing, 100 Light. This time, and this time only, Solomon Silverman is also listed at the same address, without an occupation. This is probably their father. The next year (1887 City Directory), the brothers are listed exactly the same, except that the address is now "304 Light St (100)." This is the same place. At this time, the City renumbered street addresses and the City Directory listed both the new address (304) and the old one (100). The address for Moses, the business, and for Harris is the same in the 1888 Directory, except that the business is now clothing, not liquor or saloon and clothing.
The birth of another child is recorded for August 14, 1889 (Baltimore City birth certificate A14278): A male child was born to Aaron and Caroline Silberman [again spelled with a "b" not a "v"] on August 15, 1889 at 6 N. Eden Street. The mother is identified as Caroline Buckner Silberman, born in Europe, and the father as Abram or Aaron, the name is hard to decipher, also born in Europe. This is the parents' 6th child. As this child does not appear in the 1900 census, he probably died young.
In the 1890 and 1892 listings of the Baltimore City Directory, the brothers are no longer living together, and Moses is running a saloon, first at 6 n Eden (1890) and then at 301 East (1892). In between (1891), his occupation is "liquors" instead of saloon, and that is when he is first listed on East st.
By 1897, Moses and Carrie appear to be living in Charles County Maryland, due south of Washington, D.C. where their daughter was married on October 7th. An account of the wedding reads: "The first Jewish wedding to take place in Charles County was officiated by Rabbi B. Streets of Baltimore, at Allens Fresh, a village about 4.5 miles southeast of Bel Alton, Maryland, on October 7, 1897. The bride was Miss Celia Silverman, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Moses Silverman, formerly of Baltimore, and the groom was Bernard Kaplan, of Weston, West Virginia." JC: Pruce, at p. 185.
At the time of the 1900 census "Moses A." and "Carria" Silverman are renting a home due south of Washington, D.C. in Charles County, Maryland, with six children (Harry, Rebecca, Louis, Isadore, Zelda, and Rykvan (sp?)). Moses is listed as a Merchant and is said to have been born January 1859, but to be 50 years old. To resolve the conflict and to be consistent with the 1800 census , I have assumed he was born in 1849. Carria was born January 1855. Both were born in Russia/Poland and immigrated in 1875. While Moses reads, writes and speaks English, Carria only speaks English. Carria has had ten children, of whom eight are then living. Cecilia and perhaps another older child are no longer at home. A tenth child, born after the 6th child's birth in 1889, is unidentified.
By 1905, the family is apparently back living in Baltimore. Moses is listed in the City Directory as living in Westport. The listing is a bit unusual because no occupation is giving; it is simply Silverman, Moses, Westport. Westport is then a district in Baltimore just to the south of the harbor. That this too is the same Moses is likely because Carrie Silverman and Louis Silverman [Moses and Carrie had a son Louis] are also listed as living in Westport. Carrie, unlike Moses, is given an occupation: grocer. Women are not usually listed in the City Directory unless they have an occupation or are widows. Maybe, by this time in Moses' life, two years or so before his death of alcoholic insanity, he is not working and his wife is. Louis, then about 19 years old, is listed as a clerk, and perhaps helping his mom out.
The death certificate for Moses Silverman says he died in Sykesville, Carrol County, Maryland, although Baltimore is listed as "Where Residing if not at place of death." He died on November 7, 1907 at age 58. Occupation is Merchant. He and his "unknown" parents were born in Russia. His primary cause of death was "Alcoholic Insanity (4 months)"(although one can't be sure the word is insanity), while the immediate cause of death was "Hepatitis (1 month)." The informant was W. Levin, a cousin, whom I have been unable to identify.
Moses A. Silverman "father" is buried at United Hebrew Cemetery next to Yesha Sacks, who died January 1907. Yesha's relationship to the family, if any, is not known.
Carrie Silverman is not buried with her husband. According to her death certificate she was buried at Hebrew Friendship Cemetery. The certificate states that Carrie Silverman died on April 18, 1925, at Hebrew Hospital but lived at 1913 N. Monroe; that she had lived in the United States forty nine years (i.e., immigrated c1876), and was married to Moses Aaron Silverman widower. Her date of birth and the name of her mother are "unknown," although both were from Russia, just like her father Herschel Buckner. The undertaker was Jack Lewis.
Carrie's gravestone at Hebrew Friendship Cemetery, where she is buried with several others in a plot with a large central stone labeled ROSIN/SILVERMAN, gives her date of birth as January 15, 1855 and confirms her date of death as April 18, 1925, when she would have been seventy years old. It also, inexplicably gives her middle initial as F rather than B. Cemetery office records show lots 1520, 21, 22, and 23 all owned by Carrie Silverman. Others buried there include her children Harry, Rebecca, Louis, Zelda, and Zohmo, and several others who are surely related but the actual relationship is unknown. Among this group are Rebecca Silverman (August 9, 1890 - June 17, 1921), apparently the first to be buried there; Paul Silverman ("father" August 25, 1900 - January 15, 1953); Sylvan Silverman ("father" June 20, 1904 - January 22, 1958); Sadie Silverman (January 1, 1908 - August 24, 1979); Morris A. Silverman ("father" May 21, 1912 - December 4, 1952); Sylvia S. Wallach ("mother and wife" June 13, 1913 - January 22, 1972); and Robert L. Silverman (November 19, 1919 - June 14, 2000). Notes in the office file also indicate that Florence Silverman was buried June 10, 2001 and a map of the gravesite indicates a "Reba" as well. |
