Carrie Silverman Death Certificate

Death certificate for Rebecca Buckner Silverman identifies Harry Buckner, born in Poland, as her father, and Rurah, also born in Poland, as her mother's name. At the same time, the form filled out upon Rebecca's death at the Jack Lewis funeral home gives Sarah as the name for her mother. Perhaps Rurah can be read as Sarah. Similarly, the death certificate for Louis Buckner identifies his father as Harry Buckner, born in Poland, and his mother as Sarah, also born in Poland. The informant was Minnie Hollander, presumably Louis' daughter. The death certificate for Lena Buckner Harris is reportedly even more specific; it says her parents Harry and Sarah were both born in Warsaw, Poland. [DH] On the other hand, oral tradition is that the family came from near Warsaw, not Warsaw itself, and the only record found to date which may specify a place of birth is an American birth certificate for one of Solomon's children which, whatever town it names - it is unreadable - it is not Warsaw. Carrie Buckner Silverman's death certificate does not identify her mother at all, but says that her father was Herschel. The name Harry, maybe even the name Herschel, is almost certainly an Americanization of some Yiddish or Hebrew name starting with a similar sound. In fact, the one time Sarah is listed in the Baltimore City Directory, the directory of 1891, she is listed as the widow of Harris Buckner. Harris, of course, is an Americanization of Chaim in the case of Harris Silverman; perhaps Harry was actually Chaim. No evidence uncovered so far indicates that Harry immigrated to America. On the other hand, Sarah clearly did. In the 1880 census, Sarah, a widow is living with her son Louis and his family at 60 Harrison Street in Baltimore. She is 64 (b. c1816), and was born in Poland to parents born in Poland. In the 1900 census she is still living with Louis and his family, but she was born in Russian Poland in April, 1812. (These dates for her birth are inconsistent between censuses and with other records.) No date of immigration is given. She had 18 children, of whom 8 are alive. The seven of the eight appear to be Louis, Solomon, Hyman, Rebecca, Carrie, Hester, and Lena; the eighth is unknown. In 1891, Sarah Buckner is listed in the Baltimore City Directory as a widow of Harris Buckner, residing at 1630 e Baltimore, the address of her son Louis. Sarah Buckner's own death certificate says the widow Sarah died January 23, 1902 at age 90 at 1630 E. Baltimore. That address is the same as that of her son Louis and daughter-in-law Isabelle Buckner when Isabelle died in 1909. Sarah had lived in Baltimore 27 years. She and her parents were born in Poland, although her parents are not identified. She was buried the next day at Hebrew Washington, now known as United Hebrew Cemetery. She is buried with her son Solomon and his wife in the old Eden Section. Her stone says she died January 23, 1902 at age 92, two years older than her death certificate. Cemetery records are said to say she and Solomon and Solomon's wife all lived at Whittier and High Streets. JC. In letter from Shirleigh Silverman (c1977 to WPO), Rebecca Buckner Silverman's siblings are listed as Louis, Solomon, Hyman, Carrie Buckner Silverman (married to Mosharon Silverman), and Lena Buckner, with a question mark next to Lena. The order of siblings in the chart reflects this order, even though it may be quite arbitrary, to the extent it has not been reordered by additional information. Louis preceded Rebecca and Carrie to America, and is presumably older than Rebecca and Carrie.
