LSO; AS. Chizakamuno Cemetery is also known as Arlington Cemetery on Rogers Ave. For information about the Kamens family, see the separate genealogical outline. Although family tradition and belief is that Louis was born on March 3rd, his birth certificate (A-23712) was filed on March 2, 1878. The ceritifcate is recorded under the names of "Arias and Betsy Silverman", reflecting perhaps the language difficulty of new immigrants. The birth of a male child at 74 Harrison Street was the first for his parents. The mother is identified as "Betsy (Buckner) Silverman," born in Germany, and the father is identified as Arias Silverman, a shoemaker, also born in Germany. The attendant [probably a midwife] was Sarah Caspar of 52 E. Bernhard Street [information about the attendant was hard to decipher with assurance, and this may be the same attendant at the birth of Mosharon's daughter Cecelia in 1879]. In 1880, two year old Louis is living with his parents and his uncle Simon at 78 Harrison Street according to the census. In the 1900 census, he is working as a clothing salesman, and living with his parents at 833 Hollins. The 1905 City Directory lists "Lewis" [note the spelling] as a "credit man" living with his father and brother Aaron at 1519 McCulloh. After his father's death, Louis and his brother Sol "attempted to run" the clothing business after Harris' death. MGR. Louis ran the company, according to Ed Silverman, while his brother Aaron ran the factory and brother Sol went on the road as a salesman. In fact, on being questioned more closely, Ed insisted that Louis ran the company and did not go on the road. According to Ed, Louis and Aaron were conservative businessmen while Sol was wild. He says that the brothers did not get along, and I [WPO] have heard often from Louis' descendents that while Louis got along with Aaron, the brothers did not get along and Louis always stressed to his own sons the importance of getting along with one's siblings and family. ES. Cima always thought Louis was the least intelligent of the children [but Madeline, the reporter of this opinion, did not know that he had only an 8th grade education, was forced to work in the family factory, and loved books]. Minnie was "marvelous"; everyone loved her; and she was always having everyone over. When Madeline got married, Minnie asked Madeline if she would like to use their front lawn for the wedding. MGR. Nephew Eddie Silverman remembers visiting "Uncle Lou" and playing with Shirleigh and Bertrum in 1927 or 28. Arnold was too much older to be involved. The boys had a shortwave radio, and were something like Eddie's boyhood idols. ES. At United Hebrew Cemetery, Louis is recorded as paying for the burial of his mother or mother and father, and living at 2807 Lawina Ave. and/or 3806 Edgerton Road. (Count 1388; JC: Leroy Akery.) Egerton is where his parents lived; Louis lived on Lawina at the time he informed the death certificate for his mother. The death certificate for Minerva K. Silverman records that at the time of her death on February 6, 1959, she was living at Esplanade Apt C, and that she was born in Poland to Henry Kamens and Rale Frankenstein on January 1, 1882
