At age thirteen, Bertrum changed his name to Bert. AS. As Bert himself wrote, "I'm not sure as to the date of abbreviation of my birth name from Bertram to Bert. If memory serves me correctly it was on the occasion of my bar mitzva. I must have been 14..." (BS, April 16, 1996.) Bert provided his own birthdate, which brother Shirleigh associated with war parades and encampment. (SS). Bert had multiple marriages. The children listed all were from his first marriage and adopted. Speaking of his last marriage, to Britt, Bert wrote, Barney [Arnold Silverman] was best man ("He always was, you know" at non-church Virginia wedding to Britt. "I inherited three of Britt's children ... when we joined forces. Robert, now 40 was already married when we met. Debbie, a beautiful replica of her mother got hitched shortly after our celebration. And Mark (then 21), and a duplicate of Britt, rounds up the package. Mark housekeeps for us while were down south for the winter." (BS).
