Text:
According to Barney, the family lived in Pittsburgh. Celia was a pianist too [like Rose], and a particularly lovely person. She married Hymen'. "Uncle Hymie" was in the Alaska goldrush. He died at age 45, when he was in the shoe business in Homestead, PA; Celia ran the store for years after his death; she died in 1945. They had one son, Donald. AS. Date (month and year) of birth provided by the 1900 census, when Celia is a student living with her parents. A birth certificate is recorded in the Baltimore City indexes for the birth of a child to Harry and Becka Silverman on April 11th, 1887, but the certificate itself is missing and apparently does not exist. Donald Little wrote in 1996, that his mother died in 1932, not 1945; "I was only 16." She was not a pianist but an opera singer, although she played the piano as well. My father Hymie died in 1918: "I was only 21 months and regret fully I never knew him and never benefited of hearing stories of his trips to Alaska. He went three time but I don't know anything about his experiences. I do know he was friends with Jack London and Rex Bearer(sp?) so he must have been in pretty fast company." A niece, Madeline Rubenstein recalls that Celia was a singer with the Pittsburgh Opera Company, and that "she went out in velvet and satin, caught pneumonia, and died." Hymie choked and died in Atlantic City. MGR. Ed Silverman remembers that Celia gave concerts (he thought piano) on KDKA radio, the CBS affiliate in Pittsburgh, and they would all try to pick up the station in Baltimore but usually settled for listening over the telephone. ES. That so many in the family ended up in Pittsburgh is attributed by Madeline Goldie Rubenstein to Celia, or her sister Rose. One or the other visited Pittsburgh and fell in love an married. The others girls visited, met their husbands their too. Taube , the youngest, was the last to go. MGR.
