Although Mosharon is the first Silverman brother to be listed in the City Directory for Baltimore in 1877, Simon and his brother Harris are listed and living together in the 1879 Directory at 78 Harrison. Both are shoemakers, and their brother Mosharon (as Moses) is also a shoemaker down the street at number 22 .
At the time of the 1880 census, Simon is still living with his brother Harris and Harris' family at 78 Harrison Street in Baltimore. He and Harris are shoemakers. According to the census, Simon is 23 years old and single. Actually, the census does not specify Simon's relationship to Harris (no relationship is noted, not even boarder), but does confirm that he and both his parents were born in Poland.
A few years later, in the 1884 Directory, Simon is still living at 78 Harrison, but his business, "shoes", is located at 42 Harrison. By this time, Harris has moved to number 84 Harrison, but his business is also still shoes.
The 1885 Baltimore City Directory shows Simon, again a "shoemaker", at 84 Harrison, where his brother Harris had lived the year before. Harris, though has moved on and gone into business with their brother Moses at 100 Light st whf. In the next year's Directory, Simon, "shoes," has two locations: 84 Harrison, still, and 88 Harrison as well.
Simon Silverman is not listed in the 1888 and 1891 City Directories at all. In the 1892 City Directory, a Simon Harrison is listed, but as a grocer at 211 s High. This may not be "our" Simon at all. [N.B. A death certificate exists for another Simon Silverman. This Simon is the son of Joseph Silverman and Nettie Marks, from Prushnitz, Russia, born June 10, 1863, and died at 1511 East Pratt in 1931. His wife was Frieda.]
In 1899, according to indexes for Baltimore City Court, Harris Silberman and Simon Silverman filed Naturalization Applications. Whether Silberman, with a b, and Silverman with a v, are equivalents, and whether these are family members is unclear. The documents have not been reviewed.
I could not find Simon Silverman in the 1900 census for Baltimore.
Madeline Goldie Rubenstein reported that Harris brought his brother over; they came from a town near Warsaw. Harris staked his brother to $50,000 when he went to Richmond, or maybe not Richmond, maybe Roanoke. They never heard from him again. He never called or resonded to letters or inquiries. All they got was a set of silverware as his first repayment. Rebecca or Cima used to callit their $50,000 silverware set. Madeline recently (1996) gave it to her son Louis. [I have assumed this is about Simon. - ed.] MGR. |
