Text:
From Will Ogburn Family Tree: Identified by SS, as married to a Rudo, but with no further information. MGR remembered that Yetta, sister of Rebecca or of Harris, married a Rudo. Charles Rudo, whom I take to be the son, had a flourishing sporting goods shop. The 1880 census soundex index does not include a Rudo. "Bernhard" Rudo filed a Naturalization Record of Minors with the Baltimore City Court on September 28, 1888. The 1900 lists Yetta Rudo as the wife of Bernard Rudo. That this is Yetta Silverman is quite likely, especially since their household includes Yetta Myerberg as a niece. In family tradition, Yetta Silverman's sister Fanny married a Myerberg. According to the 1900 census, Yetta was born February 1861 in Germany to parents born in Germany. This year of birth differs from her gravestone. The reference to Germany is unexpected and almost certainly in error. By tradition, the Silvermans came from near Warsaw (evidence suggests Prushnitz, north of Warsaw, where German was the dominant language), which would be Poland or Russia or Russian Poland, designations used in the censuses for other Silvermans and Buckners, and on her death certificate. German may have been Yetta's husband's place of birth and/or its designation simply one of the common errors that repeatedly crop up in the censuses. In the census, Bernard's date of birth is December 1860, although I have used the date on his death certificate because it is more specific. He, like his wife of 19 years, immigrated in 1881, and was from Germany. He was a naturalized citizen and worked as a Tailor. Both Bernard and Yetta read, writes, and speak English. They had six children, five of whom are then living, all of them still with their parents: Rubin, Zoori, Cecilia, Samuel, and Silas. In addition, as mentioned above, their niece Yetta Myerberg lives with them too Yetta, born April 1885, attends school and too was born in Germany to parents born in German. In 1902, when the Aitz Chaim congregation moved from 16 & 18 N. Exeter to 17 S. Eden, B. Rudo was on the welcoming committee at the new building's dedication. Unspecified news article, dated July 19, 1902, on file at JHS (Aitz Chaim files). Yetta Rudo died a widow at the Hebrew House for Aged and Infirm at Belvedere and Greenspring Avenues in Baltimore. The Hebrew House is given as her usual residence, but she had lived there only two months. She had lived in Baltimore 45 years. Her age is unclear, seventy something, but she was born 1869 in Russia. Her father was Solomon Silverman, born in Russia, and her mother was Miriam, also born in Russia. The informant is Zachary Rudo, 3701 Towanda Avenue. She was buried at Hebrew Washington Road, later United Hebrew Cemetery. The undertaker was Sol Levinson. DC. Records from Sol Levinson & Bros. probably provided the basis for the death certificate itself; the informant was the same. Her age is given clearly as 75, and her occupation was Housework. She died at the Levindale Home, perhaps another name for the Hebrew House for Aged and Infirm. Significantly, the cemetery is identified as Aitz Chaim Congregation, Washington Road. A death notice which appeared in the Jewish Times, January 21, 1944, reads: "Yetta Rudo, wife of later Bernard, mother of Zachary, Samuel, and Mrs. Celia Shugar. Died 1/14. Bur. United Hebrew Cemetery." JHS. "Bernhard" Rudo's death certificate says he died October 14, 1923 at age 58 years and 4 months, having been born in Russia on July 9, 1865, widowing his wife Yetta. He worked in "insurance." He died at his residence, 305 E. 25th Street, having lived in Baltimore and the United States for 42 years [i.e., since 1881]. His parents are "unknown," although both were born in Russia. He was buried the same day at Washington Road Cemetery, which today is United Hebrew Cemetery. The undertaker, Jack Lewis, was also the informant. Yetta and Bernard Rudo are buried with Fannie Rudo at United Hebrew Cemetery (account 1227, JC). The stones are marked: Yetta Rudo, 1866 - 1944 "mother"; Bernard Rudo, d. October 14, 1923 age 58 "father"; and Fannie Rudo, d. November 30, 1915 age 72 "mother". Presumably Fannie is Bernard's mother. Yetta's date of birth differs from earlier records, but I have adopted it as more likely. Other Rudos who appear in the 1900 census include Abraham and Lea Rudo and their five sons; Simon and Sarah Rudo and their five children; and a Fanny Rudo living with her son-in-law Samuel Engle. All designate their place of birth as Russia or Russian Poland. Their relationship to "our" Rudo family is undetermined. Other Rudos buried near Yetta and Bernard and Fannie include Selig (d. May 5, 1959 at age 93) and Sarah (d. March 20, 1929 at age 63); and Sarah (d. March 15, 1922 at age 33), Aaron Morris (June 9, 1902 - March 21, 1922), and Esther (December 6, 1893 - November 21, 1978 "sister and daughter"). Bernhard Rudo is mentioned first in the Baltimore City Directories in 1887, as a tailor at 1166 Low (formerly 154 Low). In 1890, he is a tailor at 431 Aisquith. The next year, still a tailor, his address is 511 n Gay, the same address as a Simon Rudo, also a tailor. In the 1905 Directory, he is a tailer, 2128 Druid Hill av, an address he shares with Robert Rudo.

Yes, so I joined a couple groups on facebook...Friends of Jews from Przasnysz and Descendants of Jews from Plock a Region of Poland. I recognized names and found the pictures of their tombstones even had this picture of Yetta Silverman Rudo. After exchanging information, I found that Bernard "Barney" Rudo was Hersz Berek Ruda and he and his brother Selig ( Zelek) changed their name to Rudo when they emigrated.
