SourceFamily Tree - Will Ogburn for Silverman/Buckner Family
Publication: Family Tree Dated February 2002
Text:
Identified by SS (Shirleigh Silverman), with no further information. The earliest records unearthed appear to refer to Solomon as Simon Buckner. One may suppose that Simon and Solomon are not the same, but brothers instead. However, I have concluded that Simon is Solomon for several reasons. (1) Simon and not Solomon appears in the 1880 census, and Solomon not Simon appears in the 1900 census. In each case, the wife is Esther, and one son is Abram (Abraham). (2) The children listed for Simon in the 1880 census appear to be the same as Solomon's. The eldest, Simon, listed in the 1880 census as son of Simon, has the same birthdate as the Simon Buckner buried at Hebrew Friendship Cemetery. The death certificate identifies his parents as Solomon and Esther and matches other particulars, including birth in Poland. Abram, Simon's son in the 1880 census, matches in particulars Abraham, Solomon's son in the 1900 census. (3) While both the 1879 City Directory and the 1880 census identify Simon as a shoemaker living at 84 Harrison Street, two birth certificates for children of Solomon and Esther Kornstein, one dated in 1879 and the other in 1880, give their address as 84 Harrison Street and, in one, says Solomon is a shoemaker. (4) Shirleigh Silverman identified Solomon as a sibling of Rebecca and Carrie Buckner, but not Simon. (5) Later listings of Simon in the City Directory are better understood as referring to Solomon's son Simon instead of a brother. Although his brothers Hyman and Louis are in earlier editions, Solomon first appears in the Baltimore City directory in 1879, as Simon, a shoemaker at 84 Harrison Street. As it happens, Harris Silverman, husband of Rebecca Buckner, and Harris' brother lived at this same address a few years later. In the 1880 census, "Simon," age 35, a shoemaker, is living at 84 Harrison Street west side, with his wife Esther, two sons and a daughter. Also living with the family is Lena Buckner, as a boarder. Wife Esther is a house keeper born in Poland to parents born in Poland, just like her husband. Their son Simon was born c1869, daughter Rachel was born in Poland c1873 and son Abram was born in Maryland c1877, so "Simon" and Esther would have immigrated about then. Baltimore City records include a birth certificate for a girl born to S. and Esther Buckner on May 27, 1879. The child was born at 84 "Harosin St", which would be Harrison Street. The mother is Esther Kornstien Buckner, who was herself born in [someplace unreadable], "Resnin Polen." The father is S. Buckner, his employment is "Busnes", and he too is born in [unreadable] "Roosnin Pollen." We know from the next birth certificate (see below) that the husband of Esther is Solomon. That the certificate identifies a place in the old world in addition to Poland could be very significant, especially since family tradition is that the Buckners and the Silvermans came from the same town, somewhere north of Warsaw. This is the only documentary evidence of a specific place, yet it is unreadable. In fact, it could simply refer to Russian Poland, a not altogether uncommon designation for the times. The certificate states that this is the parents' 7th child. This means three children not now known were born previously. As the identity of this particular girl child is not otherwise known, one may assume this is one of the several children of Esther and Solomon who died (see information from the 1900 census below). The birth certificate for their son Israel [identified only as a White Jewish boy], born June 25, 1880, also at 84 Harrison Street, bears the special notation that the "child is very healthy." Perhaps the attendant knew of the number of children Esther had already lost; the certificate notes that this boy is their 8th. Esther's maiden name is given as Kornstein, and the father is identified as Solomon. A Declaration of Intention to become an American citizen was filed by a Solomon Buckner in Baltimore City Court on September 20, 1888. On October 7, 1890, filed a Naturalization Record with the Baltimore City Court, but this document has not been reviewed. Solomon appears not to be listed in the Baltimore City Directory until 1888. At that time he is a clerk, and his address is 120 Centre Mkt sp. Two and three years later (1890, 1891) he is at the same address, but his occupation is now listed as clothing. This address is one he shares with his brother Herman (Hyman) and son Simon. That this is his son Simon, and not a brother, is presumed. Son Simon would have been c19 years old, a suitable age to be listed in the directory. The 1892 Directory changes Solomon's address to 52 Centre Mkt, while is at number 152; perhaps there is a misprint. The birth of another child is evidenced by a birth certificate for a baby girl born on June 1, 1889, at 120 Center Market Space. Solomon is identified as a merchant born in Russia. Esther is identified as Esther Houstein or Hamstein Buckner, born in Russia. Actually, her maiden name is difficult to read, and it is likely it says Kornstein. Notably, in the space labeled number of children, the blank is filled in as "Many - 13th," which confirms the information in the 1900 census. As this is Solomon and Esther's thirteenth child, it indicates that five children were born since the birth of Israel, only one of which (Isaac) is apparently alive in 1900, and two of which are not documented in any other way. In the 1900 census, Solomon is listed as born in February 1848 in Russia to parents born in Russia. He is a naturalized citizen, who immigrated in 1875, and works as a Shoe Maker. His wife of 35 years is Esther, born May 1849, also in Russia to Russian born parents. She too immigrated in 1875. While Solomon and Esther speak English, they do not read and write. Esther has had thirteen children of whom six are living. Four of their children are living with them at the time: Abraham, Israel, Isaac, and Theresa. The other two were Simon and Rachel, both born in Europe and both old enough to be out of the household. [A descendent hazily recalled in 1998 that Simon had brothers Albert and Isadore, and sisters Theresa and Rachel. [EA] Theresa and Rachel have been documented; Albert and Isadore have not unless Albert is Abraham, and Isadore is Isaac or Israel. An Isidor Buckner, born in Maryland in March 1872, before Solomon arrived in America, is recorded in the 1900 census.] Solomon's death certificate says he died January 18, 1902 at home at 126 S. High Street at age 56. He was a shoemaker, born in Russia, and lived in Baltimore 27 years. His parents are identified only as having been born in Russia. He was buried the next day at Washington Road [the location of United Hebrew Cemetery]. The 1905 Baltimore City Directory does not list Solomon Buckner, but does list Mrs. Estelle Buckner, and Simon Buckner, a clerk, living at 125 n Bond. This would be Simon's widow, Esther, and son. (Actually, Simon's brother Hyman also married an Esther, but Hyman was still alive in 1905 and it is thus very unlikely that his wife Esther would be named in the City Directory.) Esther's death certificate gives her name as Shane Esther Buckner, who died August 23, 1919 at her residence 2309 Orem Avenue, where she had lived for 40 years. She was 70 years old, and her date of birth is given as "Unknown 1849." She was born in Russia to Meyer Sherr, although her mother is "unknown." Her place of burial the next day was Hebrew Washington Road. The informant was the undertaker, Jack Lewis. Solomon and Esther are buried at in the old Eden Section of United Hebrew Cemetery, with Sarah Buckner. The stones are marked: Schina Esther Bucker, d. Aug. 23, 1919, age 72; Sarah Buckner, d. January 23, 1902, age 92; Solomon Buckner, d. Jan. 18, 1902. Cemetery records show all three lived on Whittier and High Streets. JC. These numbers indicate that all three were born earlier than reflected on other records (c1847, c1910, c1836, respectively)..

1900 Census - Lived between 126-128 South High Street. Can't read number of house. Solomon name hard to read, says born Feb 1848 and 52, Esther born May 1849 and 51, Abraham, Israel, Issac and Theresa living there. Solomon shoemaker, Abraham bookkeeper, Israel tailor, Issac Salesman, Theresa at school. Says Esther was mother of 13 children, and 6 were living. Adding Rachel and Simon from the 1880 Census would give 6 children, meaning 7 are unaccounted for.
