At the time of the 1880 census, Simon is an eleven year old living with his parents and attending school. He is listed in the 1888 City Directory as working at 522 Pratt (occupation not listed), but living at 120 Centre Mkt sp, along with his father Solomon and uncle Herman (Hyman). In 1890 and 1891, his only address is 120 Centre Mkt sp, with Solomon, and his occupation is cigarmaker. In the 1892 Directory, his address and occupation are unchanged, but Solomon's address is given (probably mistakenly) as 52 Centre Mkt sp. The 1900 census lists Suissy Buckner, b. August 1869, with his wife Sarah and daughter Carrie. That Suissy is Simon seems likely. The marriage of Simon Buckner, age 24, to Sarah Cohen, age 21, is recorded in the Baltimore City index of marriages (no minister is named). Also, at Hebrew Friendship Cemetery, where others of "our" Buckners are buried, Simon Buckner is buried with his wife and Carrie Buckner. In any event, the 1900 census says Suissy was born in Russia and immigrated in 1874, when he would have been five. This too is consistent, because Suissy, as Simon in the 1880 census, was also born in the old country. That the 1880 census said Poland and this census says Russia is quite consistent with all the other Buckners: place of birth is Poland in the earlier census, and Russia in the later one, or sometimes both together, reflecting geopolitics. Suissy is a bookkeeper. His wife of 8 years is Sarah, b. March 1871 in Russia to Russian parents, who immigrated in 1883. Together, they had four children, only two of whom are alive: Rosa, b. September 1896 in Maryland, and Carrie, b. February 1899, also in Maryland. In addition to their own children, Simon and Sarah raised their grandson Eugene Adler, son of Carrie Buckner, when he was orphaned at age 2, and was raised as a son. Eugene Adler told me that his grandfather had no accent at all because he came over from Poland when he was very young. He was a "Judge of the People's Court" for forty years. Mrs. Adler explained that he was not a lawyer; "He was not so educated." EA/DA. The death certificate for Simon Buckner states that when he died on September 24, 1942 at Sinai Hospital, he resided at 213 Piedmont Avenue and had lived in Baltimore for 60 years; that he was 65 years old and was born in 1877, dates that do not square with other information. The informant for the certificate was the hospital, and not as usual a family member. His place of burial was given as Hebrew Friendship; his parents were Solomon and Esther of Russia; his wife was Sarah, who predeceased him. The funeral director was Jack Lewis. At Hebrew Friendship Cemetery, the gravemarkers read: Sarah - Mother - 1875-1939; Simon " Father " 1869 - 1942. The lot (Div. 2 Lot 87) was owned by Simon Buckner, and later contacts were Mr. Joseph Pertnoy and Eugene Adler. Others buried in the family plot are Rachel Buckner Swartzberg, Rose Kimmel, Carrie Buckner Adler, and Eugene Adler. A folder in the cemetery's office states that the children of Simon are, not necessarily in order, Albert, Saul, Benjamin, Myron, Harry, Mrs. Joseph Pertnoy, and Rose Kimmel, and notes that Simon lived with his daughter Mrs. Pertnoy before his death. This list of children matches up well with a list provided by Mrs. Adler, who reported that Sarah and Simon had twelve children of whom eight survived; Carrie would be the eigth. DA. Using her information, and information from Hebrew Friendship Cemetery, we know this of the offspring. 1. ? 2. Infants. According to the 1900 census, two of Sarah's children did not survive. We don't know when they were born. 3. Rose Buckner Kimmel, b. September 12, 1896, d. December 31, 1962. Rosa (census) or Rose (DA). According to the 1900 census, Rosa was born September 1896. Rose Kimmel is buried with Simon Buckner at Hebrew Friendship Cemetery. Cemetery records indicate that upkeep for Rose's grave was paid by Donald Kemmel [slightly different spelling], who may be Rose's son or husband. Her gravestone refers to her as "mother." 4. Carrie Buckner, b. January 19, 1899, d. August 2, 1926; m. Hilliard Adler. The dates are taken from her gravemarker; she is buried with her parents. According to the 1900 census, Carrie was born February 1899. Cemetery records indicate that Harry Buckner assumed responsibility for the perpetual care for his sister's and brother-in-law's graves. According to DA, Carrie married Hilliard Adler, and together had a son Eugene Adler on April 16, 1923. Carrie died roughly two years later, and Hilliard even sooner. Eugene was raised as a son by his grandparents Simon and Sarah Buckner. Eugene married Dolores Terdi, and together had a daughter Carrie, who married ____ Myers. Eugene Adler died March 2001 and is buried at Hebrew Friendship Cemetery in the family plot. 5. Albert Buckner. This is Alec Buckner's father. Social Security records list an Albert Buckner from Baltimore born April 15, 1901 who died May 1987. According to DA, the only remaining Buckner offspring (2001)is Albert's son Alec, also in Baltimore. 6. Saul Buckner. A Saul J. Buckner (1904 - July 11, 1973, "father and husband") is buried at Hebrew Friendship Cemetery (division 15, lot 2656C),alone. According to DA, Saul was buried at Hebrew Friendship without his wife because his wife remarried and lived in Florida. Cemetery records list the address for this lot in the name of Saul and Eleanor Buckner, so I assume Saul's wife was Eleanor. The Social Security records list a Saul Buckner from Baltimore, but he is born August 8, 1903, who died July 1972. 7. Benjamin Buckner. "Benny" to EA. Benjamin B. Buckner (1905 - 1971) and M. Catherine Buckner (March 11, 1911 - April 2, 1988) are buried in division 15 at Hebrew Friendship Cemetery. Social Security records list a Benjamin Buckner from Baltimore area born September 24, 1905 who died October 1971, and a Catherine Buckner with the dates given above. 8. Harry Buckner. According to Mrs. Adler (DA), Harry's wife was Jean. Harry A. and Jean Buckner are buried in the newer section of Hebrew Friendship, division 15, lot 2659, along with Leslie Ray Udoff. Also, cemetery records indicate that one lot is "reserved for Henry's daughter Carrie" but there is no indication she is buried at Hebrew Friendship. Of the Harry Buckners listed on Social Security records relating to Baltimore, only one was born after 1890: Harry Buckner, born February 5, 1911, died April 1979. Social Security lists a Jean Buckner from the Baltimore area, born January 5, 1911, died October 24, 1993. Harry Buckner is listed in HFC records as providing for the perpetual care of the graves of his sister Carrie Buckner Adler and her husband Hilliard Adler. 9. Lottie Buckner. Cemetery notes indicate one of Simon's daughter is Mrs. Joseph Pertnoy. By process of elimination, this would be her. Simon lived with his daughter Mrs. Joseph Pertnoy before he died. HFC. 10. Sammy Buckner. Mrs Adler (DA) recalled that Simon and Sarah had a son Sammy, who died when he was two. In the children's section of Hebrew Friendship Cemetery (division 15) is Samuel Aaron Buckner, b. November 16, 1921, died January 13, 19[unreadable or unrecorded]. 11. Unknown child. If DA is correct in stating that Sarah Buckner had twelve children, four of whom did not survive, this would be another. Place of birth order is not known. 12. Myron Buckner, or Mickey to DA. A Myron is buried in Lot 2604B, Division 5, of Hebrew Friendship Cemetery, with Lydia Buckner and Allen M. Buckner. Social Security records show a Myron Buckner from Baltimore born January 10, 1914 and died April 1970, the date of death corresponding to DA's memory.
