Publication: Family Tree Dated February 2002
Text:
From Will Ogburn Family Tree: Hyman Buckner is the first of the Buckner siblings to appear in the City Directory for Baltimore. In 1874, H. Buckner, a shoemaker, lives at 61 Harrison Street, the street for many many Jewish immigrants over many years. No listing appears in the 1875 Directory, but the next year's Directory lists Herman Buckner, shoes, 75 Harrison Street. Over the years, the listings switch back and forth between "Herman" and "Hyman." That they are the same person is clear from the overlapping of addresses between "Herman" and "Hyman" and between each and brothers Solomon and Simon and Israel (Isaac). The 1877 Baltimore City Directory does not include Hyman, but he is listed in the 1879 Directory as Herman Buckner, shoes, 42 Harrison Street. In the 1880 census, Heiman, age 31, a shoemaker, lives at 22 Harrison Street west side, with his wife Esther and three daughters and two sons. Esther, age 27, is a housewife, born in Poland as were both her parents. Their oldest child was born in Poland c1870, so they immigrated later, but before their next child was born in Maryland in 1872. At the time of the 1884 Baltimore City Directory, Hyman is still living on Harrison Street, but at number 18; his occupation is "clothing." The listing is unchanged in the 1885 Directory, but in the 1886 Directory he appears as Herman Buckner, at 20 Harrison, and his occupation is now "shoes" as it was in the 1870s. The next year (1887), his occupation is again "clothing"; he appears as Hyman, and the address is 120 Centre Mkt sp (82). The number in parenthesis is the former address for the same building, prior to the renumbering of street addresses in the City. In 1888, Herman, clothier, business address is still 120 Centre Mkt sp, but his residence is separately listed for the first time and is 102 Harrison. On the other hand both his brother Solomon and Solomon's son Simon are residing at 120 Centre Mkt sp. In the 1890 Baltimore City Directory, Hyman appears with another Buckner, Isaac. The two are living at 250 Harrison Street, and Hyman's business is again "clothing." In fact the listings for both are unchanged in the 1891 and 1892 City Directories, except that Isaac is listed as Isreal. Given that Isaac (Isreal) is always listed as a clerk, my gut instinct is that this is Hyman's son. Hyman's date of birth is earlier in the 1900 census: September 1846. The census reports that he is a naturalized citizen, a store keeper, born in Russia, and immigrated in 1871. His wife of 31 years is Ester, born October 1853 in Russia, who immigrated in 1873, which is unexplainable different than when her husband immigrated. She is the mother of eight children, all of whom are alive, and four of whom are living with them: Harry, Morris, Aron , and Lewis. While the children can read and write, Hyman and Ester can not. The 1905 Baltimore City Directory lists Hyman Buckner, clothing, 26 Harrison Street, not far from where he began in the 1870s. Hyman's death certificate gives the date of death as December 12, 1914, when he was already widowed (and retired). He died at his residence, 135 N. Front Street, where he lived for the past ten years. His date of birth is given as December 1847 in Russia, but as the informant is the undertaker Jack Lewis instead of a family member, I have opted to use the date of birth recorded in the 1900 census. Neither parent is named, although both are recorded as born in Russia. Place of burial was Hebrew Friendship Cemetery. At Hebrew Friendship Cemetery, Hyman is buried with his wife and son Aaron (Div. 9 Lot 551). The stones are marked: "Hyman Buckner d. December 12, 1914 age 67;" "Esther Leah Buckner d. February 13, 1914 age 62;" and "Aaron 1884 - 1903." Also buried with the family is Abraham Lewis (1865 -1928) and Theresa Lewis (1875 -1932) and Esther M. Goldberg (May 6, 1922 age 86). HFC. Perhaps Theresa is Hyman's daughter, although the year of birth is not a perfect fit with other information, and perhaps Esther Goldberg is Hyman's mother-in-law, Esther Leah Buckner's mother. Notes on file in the cemetery office indicate that perpetual care was paid by Sheldon Buckner. There is some confusion in the census over the names of children. See below. Given the possibility that Hyman and Esther might not have spoken English, the 1900 census may be more reliable.

No street address listed, but death certificate for Hyman Buckner shows he died at 135 N. Front Street, which he lived at for 10 years. House number does show 135, so it is assumed to be N. Front Street.
