Identified by SS. Although Louis does not appear in the Baltimore City Directory as early as his brother Hyman, he is listed in the 1876 edition as Louis Buckner, shoemkr, 56 Harrison. Harrison Street is the home for many new Jewish immigrants over a period of many years. The next year, this listing for Louis has two addresses: shoes, 56 and 62 Harrison. The 1879 City Directory lists Louis, shoes, 60 Harrison. This is the address where his first child was born. Isabelle's maiden name is gleaned from the birth certificate of her first born, Henry, born "the 15 Mai" 1879. The certificate identifies the mother as "Iso Belle Jacoby" Buckner, born in "Enkland," and the father as Louis Buckner, employed in "Besnes" and born in "Rusken." According to the certificate, the child was born at 60 Harrison Street. In the 1880 census, Louis, age 22, is a store keeper and lives at 60 Harrison Street west side, with his wife Isabella, his mother Sarah, and his son Henry. Isabella is also 22, a housekeeper, born in England to a father born in Poland and a mother born in Germany. Their son Henry was born in Maryland c1879. On June 28, 1882, Louis Buckner, a native of Germany, filed a Declaration of Intention in Baltimore City Court to become an American citizens and renounced any allegiance to the Emperor of Germany. We also know from a court index that on the same date, Louis Buckner filed a Naturalization Record of Minors with the Baltimore City Court, but its contents have not been reviewed. In the 1884, 1885, and 1886 Baltimore City Directory, Louis is consistently listed as in the clothing business, living still living at 60 Harrison. The 1887 listing is essentially the same, except that the address is "210 Harrison (60)." The reason for the parenthesis is that the City renumbered its street addresses, and the 1887 Directory lists both the new and the (old). Although Louis' street address is now 210, he actually remains in the same location. The next year (1888 edition), the address is simply 210 Harrison, and his line of work is now "clothier." [A Mary Buckner, peddler, is listed in the 1887 Directory as well, at 179 Harrison, but her relationship to the family, if any, is unknown.] Beginning with the 1890 Baltimore City Directory, Louis is in business with Herman Harris (sometimes listed as Hyman Harris) as cloak manufacturers under the name L. Buckner & Co., located at 605 e Baltimore. This listing occurs in the 1890, 1891, and 1892 Directories. At the same time, Louis is living at 210 Harrison Street in the 1890 and 1891 listings, and at 1030 e Baltimore in the 1892 edition. As Louis is listed as living at 1630 e Baltimore in 1905, and his mother is living at 1630 e Baltimore in 1891, and that is family address when Isabelle dies, the 1030 listing is probably a misprint. In the 1900 census, Louis is listed as a Cloak Mfgr,; he owns his own home; and his place of birth is now given as Russian Poland, not just Poland as in the earlier census. Louis was born February 1858 and Isabelle was born October 1857. His wife of 22 years, Isabelle, is now said to have been born in England to parents born in England, though that seems less likely. She is the mother of 9, seven of whom are alive. Living with them are Louis' mother Sarah and all seven of their children. All the adults are recorded as able to read, write, and speak English. According to the 1905 Baltimore City Directory, Louis's business is real estate, and he continues to live at 1630 e Baltimore, with his daughter Minnie and son Henry. Madeline Goldie Rubenstein, a niece, remembers her Uncle Lou as always very dapper, and very rich. Lou had a lot of real estate, but he died penniless after the real estate market dropped. MGR. A nephew, Edwin Silverman, remembered him a white haired man, about the age of Harris Silverman, collecting rents every Saturday on the properties he owned. He had a white bushy mustache, and would wear a vest with white piping. ES. And a grandnephew, Herbert Robinson, remembers him "as a distinquished looking man with an impressive white mustache." DH: email Janaury 23, 2002. The death certificate for Isabelle Buckner indicates she died March 25, 1909 at her residence 1630 East Baltimore Street at age 51, having lived in the city for thirty years. London was her place of birth. The informant was L. Buckner, at the same address, surely her husband Louis. The undertaker was David Sondheim, and she was buried March 26th at Hebrew Friendship Cemetery. Information about her parents is omitted. The death certificate for Louis Buckner says he died January 23, 1939 at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. At the time he lived at 2214 Linden Avenue; his business was real estate (homes). His date of birth is given as February 3, 1859, (which I have used although it differs from the census) in Poland. His father is identified as Harry Buckner, born in Poland, and his mother is Sarah, also born in Poland. He was buried at Hebrew Friendship Cemetery on January 24th. The undertaker is Jack Lewis. The informant is Minnie Hollander, whose address is a few doors away at 2237 Linden Avenue. The undertaker's notes (at JHS) additionally state his age as 77; that his father is Henry, not Harry; that the funeral was ordered by Minnie Hollander; and that notice of his death was sent to the Baltimore Sun. The Jewish Times did print a notice of Louis' death. JHS. This notice, and the undertaker's notes, indicate that Louis was then married to Frances, who must be his second wife. The Jewish Times on January 31, 1936 death notice reads: "Louis Buckner, husband of Frances (nee Levy), d. 1/23 at 78y. Survived by wife and seven children: Dr. Harry E., Jacob, Alexander, Julius, Rose Goodman of Pittsburgh, Minnie Hollander, Lydia Oliner, and 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Six oldest grandsons: Mark B. Hollander, David Buckner, Hilliard Goodman, Melvin Buckner, Asher Hollander, Gerald Buckner. Bur. Hebrew Friendship." Herbert Robinson, a grandnephew of Louis, recalled a Frances Buckner, mother of Norman Kal. DH: email January 23, 2002. At Hebrew Friendship Cemetery (Division 9) Louis and Isabelle's gravestones are marked "Louis Buckner d. January 23, 1936 age 77" and "Isabelle d. March 24, 1909 age 52." Buried with them is Alexander A. Buckner, surely their son. Also buried with them is Rubin Sodden (February 5, 1935) and Rebecca Sodden (February 4, 1938) and Bluma Reichgut (April 3, 1920 at age 86), whose relationship to the Buckners is unknown. The date in the cemetery office files gives a different date than her stone; the file gives the date of July 3, 1929, and says her middle name is Tuba. The cemetery files also indicate that mail for the Louis Buckner estate is directed to Mrs. Louis Hollander. According to family tradition, Louis preceded at least Rebecca to Baltimore. In fact, before he married Rebecca, Chaim crossed the Atlantic and came to Baltimore where Louis Buckner, Rebecca's brother, had already settled. Sometime later, he sent for Rebecca, "his future wife", although both came to America c.1875. SS. ------------------------------- 1880 Census - Shows Louis and Isabella both 22 years old. Lived at 60 Harrison Street - West Side. Louis was a store keeper and Isabella was in housekeeping. Isabella's mother was from Germany and father from Poland. Mother Sarah listed as 64 years old.
