Rose G. Breslau Harris, 98, opera buff, champion whistler By FRED RASMUSSEN SUN STAFF Rose G. Breslau Harris, who outlived two husbands, her two sons, and at 98 still was living independently, loving music, walking, playing cards and being with relatives, died of pneumonia Monday at Sinai Hospital. The former Rose Glasser, a resident of the Highfield House on North Charles Street for more than 30 years, was the first-born child in Baltimore of Jewish immigrant parents who came to the city in 1894 from Latvia. "She was one of six and the 'American baby' when she was born," said her grandson, Andrew Breslau of New York City." She lived almost the entire century in Baltimore and nearly got her full fare's worth. "She knew the Baltimore of horse-drawn carriages and little electric light. Her time spanned those years to men walking on the moon. "She used to tell us stories about the ice man and making her own soap. She communicated this bygone and vanished world to her grandchildren, yet remained a contemporary woman who lived unassisted and valued her independence," he said. Educated in city schools, Mrs. Harris was a stenographer as a young woman before she married retailer Abraham Breslau in 1918. During 34 years of marriage, the couple raised two sons, both now deceased. In 1954, she married Saul A. Harris, then Baltimore state's attorney. He died in 1962. Mrs. Harris worked during the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s as a sales associate for the old Schleisner & Co. women's ready-to-wear store in the 300 block of N. Howard St. "She was a very fashionable woman who was one of the prettiest women of her time in Baltimore," said her niece, Harriet Azrael of Baltimore. "She had delicate features and always wore the latest stylish fashions." Mrs. Harris collected operatic recordings and was a devoted Saturday afternoon listener to the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts. "Besides being an opera buff, she was a champion whistler who kept on whistling up until a few years ago," said Mr. Breslau. Her repertoire included operatic arias and Yiddish and popular songs. Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Baltimore Hebrew Temple, 7401 Park Heights Ave. She was a member of the Baltimore Hebrew Congregation for 80 years. In addition to her grandson and niece, survivors include another grandson, David Breslau of Los Angeles; three granddaughters, Nancy Lewis and Linda Berg, both of Bethesda, and Jill Breslau of Berkeley, Calif.; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
