Roy Garber, 71, who was cantor emeritus at Washington Hebrew Congregation after being the first full-time cantor there, died yesterday at the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington. He had Parkinson's disease.
Mr. Garber came to Washington Hebrew Congregation, the largest Reform congregation in the Washington area, in 1977. He retired in 1989.
A cantor sings liturgical melodies during religious services. Mr. Garber was known for his abilities as both a singer and composer of liturgical music. Among other things, he was recognized for his chanting of "Avinu Malkeinu," one of the prayers offered during services on Yom Kippur.
As cantor, he trained scores of youngsters for their bar mitzvah and bat mitzvah ceremonies and created the Northwest Washington congregation's first adult choir composed of lay people.
He was born in Lynn, Mass., and received bachelor's and master's degrees from the New England Conservatory of Music. He trained as a cantor at Hebrew Union College in New York.
Before coming to Washington, he had been the first full-time cantor for congregations in Kansas City, Mo., and Milwaukee. His arrival at Washington Hebrew was seen as representing a trend toward bringing cantorial music into the services of the Reform movement, one of three major branches of Judaism.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley, of Potomac; a daughter, Robin Garber, of Bethesda; a son, Dr. Ben Garber, of Hollis, N.H.; and two grandchildren. |
