Funeral Services for Rabbi Samuel Hurwitz, who died Wednesday night, were held yesterday at his late home, 2432 Eutaw Place. Practically the entire rabbinate of Baltimore delivered eulogies at the funeral.
Came Here 31 Years Ago
Rabbi Hurwitz had been rabbi of the Ahavas Sholom Congregation, Poppleton street, for eighteen years, and jointly of that and of the Mishkan Sholom Congregation, Brookfield avenue, for the past several years.
He came to Baltimore thirty-one years ago. His first pulpit was at Beth Israel, Eden street congregation.
The funeral cortege yesterday passed all the synagogues of which he had been rabbi and his body was taken into the Poppleton street synagogue, where additional services were held. Burial was in Rosedale Cemetery.
Rabbi Hurwitz was one of the founders and guiding spirits of the Hebrew Parochial School and was a leader in Zionist circles. He was the author of a number of works on religious and allied subjects and was a contributor to many rabbinical journals.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Ida Hurwit; three daughters, Miss Bertha Hurwitz, Miss Sylvia Hurwitz and Miss Leah Hurwitz, and four sons, Dr. Abraham Hurwitz, a physician; David I. Hurwitz. an attorney; Joseph Hurwitz, an artist, all of Baltimore, and Rabbi Jacob Hurwitz, of New York. |

Samuel Hurwitz, Who Died Following Brief Illness, headed 2 Congregations Here
Funeral services for Rabbi Samuel Hurwitz. who died last night following an illness of several days, are being held today at his home, 2132 Eutaw Place.
Rabbi Hurwitz was in charge of the Ahavas Shalom Poppleton street congregation and the Mishkan Shalom Brookfield avenue congregation for a number years. During his thirty years residence here, Rabbi Hurwitz took part in Jewish civic affairs and was widely known as an orator.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ida Hurwitz; three daughters, the Misses Sylvia, Bertha and Leah Hurwitz; four sons, Dr. Abraham, David I., Joseph and Rabbi Jacob Hurwitz, the latter of New York. Burial will be in the Rosedale Cemetery. |
