Dr. Abraham B. Hurwitz, a retired internist who practiced medicine in Baltimore for nearly 50 years, died Monday of a heart attack at his Pikesville home. He was 91. Dr. Hurwitz, whose office was on Liberty Road, began practicing medicine in 1938 and retired in 1987.
The son of Russian immigrants, he was born in Baltimore and raised on Eutaw Place. His father, Samuel Hurwitz, was rabbi of the Poppleton Street Synagogue in Southwest Baltimore.
A City College graduate, Dr. Hurwitz earned his bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy and, in 1938, his medical degree from the university’s School of Medicine. He completed an internship in internal medicine at Sinai Hospital and a pediatric residency at Brooklyn Jewish Hospital in New York.
Dr. Hurwitz’s philanthropic interests included the Talmudical Academy, the Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore and the United Way. He was a member of Chizuk Amuno Synagogue and an associate member of Hadassah.
“His hobby was medicine,” said his wife of 50 years, the former Saralee Jed.
Services were held Wednesday. Other survivors include a daughter, Shelley Hurwitz of Brookline, Mass.; a brother, Rabbi Jack Hurwitz of Binghamton, N.Y.; and a sister, Sylvia Gimbel of Baltimore. |
