Rabbi Jacob Hurwitz, Rabbi Emeritus of Temple Israel, Vestal, passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2003. Rabbi Hurwitz came to Binghamton in 1948 after serving in Philadelphia and Flint, Michigan, and was the active Rabbi until his retirement in 1982. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth; a daughter. Dr. Phyllis Duvdevani; three brothers and two sisters. He is survived by a daughter, Sharon, son-in-law, Steven; two grandsons, Joshua and Benjamin; a son-in-law, llan, two granddaughters, Yael and Tamar; a sister. Sylvia and her husband Harry, as well as several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Rabbi Hurwitz received his B.A. at Yeshiva University, his rabbinical ordination and D.D. at the Jewish Theological Seminary; and an M.A. at Columbia University. He was also the Jewish Chaplain at the Binghamton Psychiatric Center and Broome Developmental Center. During his long career. Rabbi Hurwitz was involved in many community activities.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Temple Israel. Rabbi Barry Baron and Rabbi Mark Raphael will officiate. Interment will be in Temple Israel-Riverside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the charitv of one's choice, or to Temple Israel. 4733 Deerfield PI., Vestal. N.Y. 1 3850. Due to the holiday of Shavuot, the family will receive friends at 5 Riverside Dr. Sunday from I to 4 p.m. Arrangements are by the Ernest H. Parsons Funeral Home, Inc., 71 Main St., Birmhamton. |
