Ruth Hurwitz, wife of Rabbi Jacob Hurwitz, died late yesterday at Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Hospital.
Hurwitz, of 64 Aldrich Ave., Binghamton, had been ill with cancer, her husband said.
Her most recent activity had been writing book reviews, for which she was noted over the years, her husband said. He said about 400 women last year attended interfaith reviews she gave at Temple Israel.
She received awards for writing in the 1950s. She twice received awards for playwriting from the National Women's League of United Synagogues, and received an award from the National Women's League of Temple Sisterhoods for a poetry drama in 1954.
A graduate of Hunter College, she had been director of the Children's Museum in Brooklyn. She taught science for several terms at Binghamton junior high schools "over the years," her husband said, and taught anatomy and physiology at Broome Community College several years ago.
Hurwitz had served on the board of the Broome County Zoological Society, and was a member of the Broome County League of Women Voters.
Her husband said she belonged to about six organizations for environmental protection, and was also a member of wildlife protection groups. He said she lobbied in Washington as an individual for the preservation of public lands.
She is survived by her husband, rabbi emeritus of Temple Israel, and two daughters and sons-in-law, Dr. Phyllis and Ilan Duvdevani of Leonia, N.J., and Sharon and Steven Rothmel of Ames, Iowa; a brother and sister-in-law, Dr. George and Florence Strenger, in California; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services are scheduled at 3 p.m. Sundav at the Temple Israel, Deerfield Place, Vestal. Hurwitz will be buried at Temple Israel cemetery, Conklin Road, Conklin. Shivah, the formal mourning period, will be observed at the Hurwitz residence in Binghamton. |
