Jean Rhea Backer C apian (Shaina Rekha bas Shoriya Tzvi Hirsh v'Pesha Brocha) passed away peacefully Thursday night, February 9, 2006, at the age of 98 years, one month, and five days, at home, in Long Beach, N.Y. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, and raised in Richmond, Virginia, Mrs. Caplan was the daughter of immigrants, from Eastern Europe. Her mother, Bertha Le-par Backer, was from "Zhdmel" now Zeimelis, Lithuania, while her father, Harry Backer (born Bochur) was from Skaistkalne, Latvia, with ties to Birzai, Lithuania. She was the beloved wife of the late Rabbi Harry N. Caplan, and while her husband was in the active Reform Rabbinate, she helped to serve congregations in Allen town, Pennsylvania, Natchez, Mississippi, Albany, Georgia, and Raleigh, North Carolina. She was the Principal Emeritus of the Religious School of Temple Beth Or in Raleigh. She was the devoted mother of two sons, Neil (married to Judi) and Marc (married to Hannah) Ca- Kin. She was the much cher-ed Granny Jean to grandchildren Hillel (Joann), Baruch (Aliza), Ariel, Luna Leila and Noe; and great-grandchildren, Esther Malka, Gwen, Owen, and Chana Rivka. She will long be remembered lovingly by her two brothers, Moe Backer and Lab-on Backer; and her many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
