BACKER, Moe I., 97, of Richmond, passed away Friday, March 19, 2010. He was the son of the late Harry and Bertha Backer, and was preceded in death by his first wife, Janet Breitstein Backer, and second wife, Marian Cohen Backer. He is survived by his children, Chuck Backer and his wife, Anne, of Hendersonville, N.C., Richard Backer and his wife, Lois, of Richmond, and Joanie Paxton and her husband, Walt, of Bel Air, Md.; stepchildren, David Cohen and his wife, Geri, of Maryland, Susan Mitchell and her husband, Jack, of Richmond, and Sanford Cohen and his wife, Jacquie, of Maryland; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Mr. Backer was born in Richmond and graduated from John Marshall High School. He earned a mechanical engineering degree from Virginia Tech in 1934. He was an army veteran of World War II, attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel, and was co-owner of the Lafayette Foodland. After retirement, Mr. Backer worked as a tax auditor for Henrico County. He was a longtime member of Temple Beth-El of Richmond. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday (today) in the chapel of Richmond Beth-El Cemetery at Forest Lawn. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Temple Beth-El or a charity of your choice. Bliley's-Central is in charge of arrangements.
