Private graveside services for Borah Z. Burman, former Baltimore newsman and drama editor of the Quincy (Mass.) Patriot-Ledger, were held here this morning at the Beth Tfiloh Congregation Cemetery.
Mr. Burman, 34, died yesterday at the New England Deaconness Hospital in Brookline, Mass., after a short illness.
Long active in theatrical work of many sorts, he directed productions by local Baltimore groups and wrote for The Sunday Sun, the News-Post and the theatrical trade journal, Variety Magazine, before joining the staff of the Patriot-Ledger.
Forest Park High
Born in Philadelphia, he nevertheless was said to consider Baltimore his home. After graduating from Forest Park High School here, he received his B.A. degree in English from the University of Maryland in 1954.
For several years Mr. Burman served as Baltimore correspondent for Variety magazine, and in 1957 joined the Sunday Sun, where he was television editor.
Returning to college, he earned a master's degree from the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, and then worked for the News-Post for about a year.
Inaugurating the Patrio-Ledger's "Limelight" page, when he moved to the paper two years ago, Mr. Burman was responsible for its winning an award for excellence last March from the Motion Picture Association of America.
Directed Theater
While in Baltimore, he had directed productions for both the old Stagecrafters theatrical group, as well as for the Vagabond Play ers.
Edward W. Barrett, dean of the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, said of Mr. Burman: "Death has cut short a very useful and excellent work. He was on a new journalistic frontier. bringing the news of art in all its forms to the reading public. "
He had taste, a sharply-honed critical judgment, a wide range of interests in our society and its culture, and supreme dedication to his career as a communicator in this field."
Mr. Burman's father, the late Howard A. Burman, had been publisher of the old Baltimore Home News, until his death in 1953. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Rena Burman, and a sister, Mrs. S. Leonard Sollins. |
