Charles C. Rudo, retired president of Rudo Sports, who had been a football player and coach, a lacrosse player and an official in several sports, died Tuesday of cancer at his home in Plkesvllle.
Mr. Rudo, who was 74, retired about five years ago as president of the company that sells sports clothing, shoes and equipment at several locations in the Baltimore area.
When Mr. Rudo and his brother, Aaron, who now heads the company, started It In 1947, they called it Charley Rudo Sports because of his prominence as an athlete. That name was retained until about two years ago.
A native of Baltimore, Mr. Rudo was a 1937 graduate of City College and was named to an All Maryland Scholastic Association football team as a high school halfback.
He attended and played football at the University of Maryland and graduated from the Johns Hopkins University, where he was named to an All Maryland football team and played lacrosse.
He served in the Army in North Africa and Italy during World War II and was awarded a Purple Heart before returning to City as a physical education teacher and football and lacrosse coach.
The City football team he coached In 1945 lost to Poly in a tight 7-to-6 game - unlike the City teams he had played on from 1934 to 1936, teams that shut down Poly by scores of 13-0, 26-0 and 20-0.
After relinquishing the head coaching job the next year to other returning veterans, Mr. Rudo continued to teach and coach football and lacrosse teams for several years after the company was started, becoming junior varsity coach at Patterson Park High School in 1949. He also officiated at football, basketball and lacrosse games.
During his college days, he had worked as a waiter and later as a counselor at Camp Cody, a summer camp that was located In Pennsylvania and later in New Hampshire. In the late 1950s, he served as the camp director.
A member of the Beth Tfiloh Congregation, Mr. Rudo was also a member of the health club at the Jewish Community Center, where he played handball for many years and was a volunteer who supported athletic programs and served as master of ceremonies at awards banquets and other affairs. In 1982, 1983 and 1984 he was himself honored by the center, first as the outstanding volunteer and then twice as man of the year.
Services were conducted Wednesday.
Mr. Rudo is survived by his wife, the former Selma Levin; two sons, Clifford J. Rudo and Harold Rudo, both of Plkesvllle; a daughter, Rochelle Rudo of Charlotte, N.C.; his brother, Aaron Rudo of Plkesvllle; and five grandchildren.
