Melvin H. “Mel” Hamburger of Lowell, entered into rest on March 25, 2013, in Boston, aged 81 years. He was the beloved husband of the late Lillian (Poppel) Hamburger, with whom he was married for 41 years.
Born in Chelsea, MA, July 28, 1931, a son of the late Samuel and Frances (Gamrin) Hamburger. He received his early education in the Chelsea school system and was a graduate of Chelsea High School. He furthered his education at Brandeis University, in Waltham, on a football scholarship.
He was a member of the U. S. Army National Guard.
Melvin met Lillian at Old Orchard Beach, Maine. They married in 1956 and settled on Westford Street, in the Highlands neighborhood of Lowell, to raise their family.
Mel founded L and M Auto Body on Arch Street in Lowell, which he owned and operated successfully for over 50 years, until he sold the business in 2007. Not one to sit still, he then went to work at UPS, and at the time of his passing, was working for Securitas Security Systems on George Street.
Mr. Hamburger was a longtime member of the former Temple Beth El Synagogue, and was currently a member of the Montefiore Synagogue of Lowell.
Mel was a fan of all New England professional sports teams. He also enjoyed gardening, reading and playing gin rummy. He was a longtime, charismatic member of the Lowell YMCA, where he always ran his three miles a day.
Mr. Hamburger was “a man for all seasons”, and will always be remembered for his love and dedication to his family, especially his cherished grandchildren.
He is survived by a daughter, Susan van Dijk and her husband Peter of Rye, NY, and a son, Seth Hamburger and his wife Lisa of Wells, ME. Two granddaughters, Miranda van Dijk of Rye, NY, and Savannah Hamburger of Wells, ME, and two grandsons, Jake van Dijk of Rye, NY, and Jacob Hamburger of Wells, ME. Two brothers, Irwin Hamburger and his wife Diane of Kissimmee, FL, and Gerald Hamburger and his wife Barbara of Delray, FL. A brother-in-law, Samuel Poppel and his wife Ruth of Longmeadow, MA. Several nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.

His graveside service will be held on Thursday, at Temple Beth El Cemetery, Waverly Ave., Chelmsford, at 1:00 PM. Memorial visitation at his home, following the committal, from 3 to 6 PM.
