PAWN SHOP BROKER IS SLAIN IN GARY Three suspects, two Negroes and a white man were arrested shortly before midnight and held by Gary police on open charges for investigation today, into the slaying of Joseph Goldberg, age 58, pawn shop broker, during a daring holdup yesterday afternoon. The suspects are Ardis Thurston, 23, 708 Hovey street, white, and Eddie Waters, 25, 218 West 17th avenue, and Robert Nunn, 20, 1829 Madison street, both Negroes. They were arrested at 18th avenue and Massachusetts street, while riding around in an automobile. The robbery and fatal shooting occurred at 1:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the Gary Loan & Mercantile Co. 1004 Broadway. Dying from a bullet wound, Goldberg spread the alarm by ringing the burglar alarm, summoning police to the scene. He succumbed on the operating table in Mercy hospital. Goldberg operated the pawn shop with Emanuel Cohen, who was out at the time. When the bandits all armed entered the shop several customers were in the place. They were R. L. Robinson, 537 Jackson, Anna Vahner, 2345 Adams, Mary Doshen, 2269 Washington and Don Miller, 912 Broadway. When Goldberg had waited upon the customers and were leaving the pawn shop, one of the Negro robbers approached Goldberg and asked to see revolver. As Goldberg leaned over to take the gun from the case, the Negro bandit stuck a gun into his face, telling him to "stick 'em up." Instead of complying with the command, Goldberg, a small and wiry man, quickly struck the robber in the face with all his might. The bandit staggered and almost fell. He recovered in an instant, however, and deliberately fired at the pawn shop owner who slumped to the floor back of the case mortally wounded. The white bandit who was covering Robinson with a revolver, yelled to his confederates, "Let's scram and get out of here." They then fled without taking any money or loot. Goldberg is well known. He came to Gary with his family from Kansas City, Mo., ten years ago. He is survived by his wife, daughter, Mrs. Leon Wintner, empjloye of the Empire Furniture Co.. and a son, Harold, connected with a pawn shop in Hammond.
